The Wallet-Vote

For years I have used my grocery money as a way to vote.  I would shop at local Co-ops, farmer's markets, buy only organic products.  I think you get the picture.  One of the most difficult things in this age of multi-national corporations is to know who you are buying from.  A nice little organic/free range/we are nice to animals type company starts up and then it gets sold to Pepsi, or Coca-Cola and who the !@#$ knows what is happening.

Well along comes an app for iPhone or Droid to help you sort out whether that item you are buying matches your values.  The app is called Buycott and here is a link to a review:   Buycott app for iPhone and Droid  This little gem of an app allows you to scan a bar code and get information regarding the companies "family tree" and whether it conflicts with any of the campaigns you have joined.  For example:  I downloaded the app for iPhone, created an account and joined 4 campaigns.

No Monsanto
Demand GMO labeling
Save the pigs  (not that I eat pork, but it is an farm/animal rights issue for me)
No to GMO/yes to non GMO products

So off to the store and bar scan the celery,  oops, the brand I picked up donated money to keep GMO's from being labeled.  The celery next to it had no such conflict.  I bought the non-conflict free celery.    It is a complex world with little transparency, and this is just one more way I can try and make my wallet-vote count for something.

You can find more information on the  Buycott website.
